QUADRICEPS FEMORIS MUSCLE

The muscles of the anterior compartment of the thigh are a group of muscles that (mostly) act to extend the lower limb at the knee joint.

They are collectively innervated by the femoral nerve (L2-L4), and recieve arterial supply from the femoral artery.

In this article, we shall look at the anatomy of the muscles of the anterior thigh – their actions, attachments and clinical correlations.

KNEE JOINT

The knee joint is a hinge type synovial joint, which mainly allows for flexion and extension (and a small degree of medial and lateral rotation). It is formed by articulations between the patella, femur and tibia.

In this article, we shall examine the anatomy of the knee joint – its articulating surfaces, ligaments and neurovascular supply.

uterus with ovary

Anatomical Structure

The uterus is a thick-walled muscular organ capable of expansion to accommodate a growing fetus. It is connected distally to the vagina, and laterally to the uterine tubes.

The uterus has three parts;

tongue

The tongue is a muscular structure located on the floor of the oral cavity.

It is the primary taste organ and plays a key role in the initial phases of swallowing.

Intrinsic Muscles

The intrinsic muscles originate and attach to other structures within the tongue.

stomach with oesophagus

The esophagus, historically also spelled oesophagus, is a tubular, elongated organ of the digestive system which connects the pharynx to the stomach. The esophagus is the organ that food travels through to reach the stomach for further digestion.

The oesophagus begins in the neck, at the level of C6. Here, it is continuous superiorly with the laryngeal part of the pharynx (the laryngopharynx).
